2016 ISDE Day 5: Team USA on the Verge of History

For once, the bad luck falls to Spain and Italy, giving Team USA a real shot at its first ever World Trophy win at the 2016 ISDE!

After learning Italy was no longer in the picture, Taylor Robert found himself having to strike a delicate balance between backing it down slightly to make sure he finishes the event and still riding on the edge to preserve his overall lead individually at the 2016 ISDE. He was fourth for the day overall but still leads on aggregate time. PHOTO BY MARK KARIYA.

What was expected to be a nail-biting final two days for Team USA at the 2016 ISDE in Navarra, Spain, became far less stressful early on the event’s fifth day, giving the World Trophy team a real chance at its first-ever

First, Spanish legend Ivan Cervantes pronounced himself unable to continue after a huge crash yesterday, dropping the host country from fourth to 15th in the FIM World Trophy category. Then, Manuel Monni of Italy—the closest rival to the Americans—crashed and broke his throttle hand in the very first special test. With all four riders’ scores counting in World Trophy calculations, Italy found itself plummeting from second to 19th.

Those incidents left Team USA with a fairly comfortable three minute and 43.62-second lead over new runner-up Great Britain with the Czech Republic a distant third, 29:16.59 back of the American quartet.

Taylor Robert once again led the way for the Americans, though on the day he was fourth overall behind Spanish Junior World Trophy phenom Josep Garcia, Australian World Trophy rider Daniel Sanders and Italian World Trophy rider Giacomo Redondi. However, Robert remains the overall leader individually for the week so far, his margin over second-placed Sanders now down to 12.10 seconds.

“We knew we had just over a minute lead [on Italy going into today and] we don’t want to lose a lot of time today so you’ve just got to take it one test at a time,” Robert explained. “That’s what I kept telling myself: Get through every test. After the first test we found out that Italy had dropped a rider so now we had a three-minute lead on [Great Britain] so then it was like a huge relief for everybody but me because I’m still battling [for] the overall. I think they kind of were able to tone it down and put it into survival mode, but I was still out there hanging it out because I have a big overall [individual win] on the line, too.”

Though teammates Thad Duvall, Layne Michael and Kailub Russell were able to relax a little, they still combined for a score 22-plus seconds ahead of the British for the day.

Things were a bit more tense for the U.S. Junior World Trophy team. Though Grant Baylor’s score was second-fastest Junior, third-fastest in E2 and 10th best for the day, Sweden added a couple seconds to its lead, which now stands at 26.92 seconds. Steward Baylor was sixth for the day in E2 and 20th overall with Trevor Bollinger 13th in E1 and 32nd overall.

Maria Franke of Germany posted the best score of the FIM Women’s World Trophy racers, though her team remains third behind defending champ Australia and Spain. Team USA remains fourth in the division; despite losing Rachel Gutish yesterday to a blown engine and knee injury, Tarah Geiger and Nicole Bradford remain in it since each of the Women’s teams can toss its worst score each day.

The inaugural FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy got underway yesterday with an old-school 200-meter acceleration test. Today, riders took to a shortened but fun trail plus rode two tests ahead of the Six Days competitors. The sole American in the race, Six Days veteran Fred Hoess took his 1985 Husqvarna 250 WR to the top of the time sheets. Tomorrow, the vintage racers will also ride the final motocross test. The organizers posted incorrect results for the Club teams last night so the ones released this evening appear to be right with
Italy leading and Team USA’s Trail Jesters (Ben Kelley, Jason Klammer and Josh Toth) second, 5:32.75 behind. Eric Cleveland Memorial (Alex Dorsey, Broc Hepler and Jimmy Jarrett) are third, 7:42.02 behind their fellow Americans. ECM needs to hold onto its 42.81-second lead over the United Kingdom’s Team Scotland to preserve its podium spot.

Hepler was the fastest Club rider of the day at 35th overall, though he was only 2.28 seconds ahead of 36th overall Josh Toth. Missouri Mudders (JT Baker, Nate Ferderer and Ryan Powell) are listed at sixth, Tony Agonis Memorial (Kale Elworthy, Joey Fiasconaro and AJ Lehr) ninth, Michigan Offroad Events (Mike Pillar, Luke Ross and Talon Soenksen) 18th and Elizabeth Scott Community (Dan Capparelli, Jayson Densley and Brian Storrie) 21st.

The traditional bar-to-bar motocross tests by class and classification will close out the 2016 ISDE tomorrow.
