Multi-time Baja motorcycle racing champion Steve Hengeveld has been confirmed as an entrant in the 2015 Baja Rally.

Hengeveld, a seven-time winner of the Baja 1000 and six-time winner of the Baja 500, will be making his second attempt at a Baja Rally win after scoring an impressive Stage 3 win and third overall finish in the 2014 Baja Rally. The 2015 Baja Rally is scheduled to depart from Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, and run from September 28 through October 2.

“What brings me back is the rally itself,” Hengeveld said, “The organization and the event is an experience everyone should try. I’ve raced all forms of motorsports, and the rally has really caught my eye. I love the professionalism that Scotty [Breauxman] and his team bring to the event. It’s a top notch organization.”

Hengeveld, who is well known for his tenure with American Honda and role in the documentary film “Dust to Glory”, is still an active Baja racer, and he was part of the overall SCORE championship-winning THR Motorsports Kawasaki team in 2014. Now “Henge” aspires to race more rallies in the future and, ultimately, to finish the Dakar Rally.

“I do have plans to race the Dakar Rally,” Hengeveld said, “I know that it would be one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. My plans for the 2015-2016 racing seasons are to participate in as many rallies as possible. Right now, I’m really looking forward to what the Baja Rally has in store for us. I’m excited.”

Former Baja Rally winner-turned-Baja Rally Director of Competition [and Hengeveld’s former Honda teammate] Andy Grider said that he is excited to have one of Baja’s best coming back to the Baja Rally.

“It shows that our Baja Rally is one of the top events in Mexico,” Grider said. “Steve knows his way around the Baja California peninsula as well as anyone riding today. With his knowledge of the changing terrain and comfort levels, we can expect him to be among the top finishers on each stage.”

Baja Rally Executive Vice President and former SCORE Champion Fred Sobke concurs.

“Henge and Monkey Business Racing are a big boost for our event,” Sobke said. “He definitely kept the field on their toes last year and surely will be a threat to the podium once again.”
