Top 10 American Speedway Riders of All Time

Veteran motojournalist Scott Dalosio risks his reputation to create a list of the Top 10 American Speedway Riders of All-time. Where’s your favorite?

Making a top 10 all-time list of any variety is a thankless job. However, making one for American Speedway riders is be nearly impossible. The sport was hot in the USA in the 1930 and 40’s, but virtually died for 20 years until the late 1960’s. Throw in the fact that you must consider that some riders were successful in the USA and overseas. Then again, some were successful in the homeland and not overseas and vice versa. The following list is neither based on talent nor accomplishments alone. It combines them. Two huge eras, multiple continents and lots of stars. It is a heavy task that is destined to draw the praise of a few and the ire of many, but we’re going to do it anyway

10. Kelly Moran

Kelly Moran’s spectacular style made him one of the world’s most popular riders, and his exploits off the track were of legendary status. Many said he was not serious enough. That may have been true off the track, but once he put on his helmet he had a huge will to win. He could ride anywhere on the track with ease. The “Wizard of Balance” qualified for three World finals and finished fourth each time. He won two U.S. National championships, back to back, in 1983 and 1984. A part of the USA team that won the 1982 World Team Cup, eight years later he top scored for the team when it won for the second time.
