Retrospective: 20 Years of Yamaha YZ Four-Stroke MXers

Yamaha introduced the YZ400F four-stroke motocross machine 20 years ago. Here’s a look back at the generations of YZs that lead to the 2018 YZ450.

With 2006 marking the 50th anniversary of the Yamaha Motor Corporation, Yamaha retooled the YZ450F yet again, making over 300 changes to the bike and addressing issues that prevented it from winning the lion’s share of magazine shootouts over the previous three seasons–namely that it was simply too brutal for the average rider to handle. Yamaha engineers worked to make the YZ450F a more versatile four-stroke MXer by giving it a more user-friendly power delivery and going back to a five-speed transmission. The 2006 model year also marked the introduction of an all-new aluminum single backbone frame, and a KYB Speed Sensitive System spring fork that is still so competent it puts a lot of air forks on the market to shame even to this day.
