Salt is being mined at Bonneville, but not for actual table salt. The company Intrepid Potash siphons off brine from the salt during the wet winter months and extracts the potassium, which is used to create fertilizers. Due to the outcry from the racing community, the company has begun voluntarily pumping processed brine back onto the flats, currently claiming they are replacing more salt than they remove. The BLM, tasked with the protecting the area, maintains that restoration efforts are underway, but only time will tell if Bonneville’s famous salt flats will return to its former condition.
