2016 ISDE Day 2: USA Pads World Trophy Lead

Things look even better for Team USA after Day 2 of the 2016 ISDE in Navarra, Spain.

The U.S. World Trophy team padded its lead over Italy slightly today, the second day of the 91st International Six Days Enduro (2016 ISDE) in Navarra, Spain, going from 26.02 seconds yesterday to 32.38 seconds. Great Britain is third, just over a minute farther back.

Some of the credit goes to Taylor Robert who now leads the individual standings overall, though by only 0.41 seconds over Josep Garcia of Spain’s Junior World Trophy team.

“I had a really good day today,” Robert said. “I had a pretty big get-off right here in the test at the paddock the first lap around. Other than that, I rode really good all day. I think the whole team rode really well, actually. Layne [Michael] moved up from, like 41st [yesterday] to 25th [overall individually] so he made up a lot of ground. Kailub [Russell is] fifth, I think, and Thad [Duvall] is [19th].

“We’ve just got to keep pushing and keep everybody healthy,” Robert said. “I know a couple guys had some big get-offs today—Kailub and Thad both had pretty good crashes—so hopefully we can keep that under control and keep the bikes together and carry it on!”

On a similar note, the American Junior World Trophy trio (Grant Baylor, Steward Baylor Jr. and Trevor Bollinger) found themselves moving up to third in that category behind Sweden and Spain after Italy slipped to fourth. Team USA is 24.28 seconds behind Spain and 39.60 seconds behind the Swedes.

“That’s not too much to say that we can’t do it,” Baylor Jr. said. “Tomorrow, I think with Trevor and Grant starting a little bit further back, it’s going to be a new day [and on a new loop], and the trails are going to be a little bit better broken in for them, so I’m really banking that they can make up the time in those first couple tests that we need. Ten seconds a day, that’s all we need!”

In the Women’s World Trophy division, defending champions Australia continued to lead over Spain and Germany. Team USA’s trio of Nicole Bradford, Tarah Geiger and Rachel Gutish slipped one spot to fifth, the Swedes punting them out of fourth though only by 16.88 seconds.

Too good to be true? The U.S. is even enjoying success at the Club level in the 2016 ISDE. At the moment, Josh Toth (shown) is the top Club rider. Strong rides have also been put in by Broc Hepler, and USA Club teams currently occupy fourth through sixth place in their division. PHOTO BY MARK KARIYA.

While two Spanish teams are 1-3 in the Club standings after Day One (Club team results for Day Two weren’t available as this was written), Team USA’s Trail Jesters (Ben Kelley, Jason Klammer and Josh Toth), Eric Cleveland Memorial (Alex Dorsey, Broc Hepler and Jimmy Jarrett) and Missouri Mudders (JT Baker, Nate Ferderer and Ryan Powell) are 4-5-6. Even more impressive is Toth, the young man from New England is the top Club rider in the field after two days, Hepler the second-fastest Club rider.

Tomorrow will see the field tackle a new loop and after the light rain that’s been falling since late afternoon, conditions might be perfect instead of the dust bowl of the past two days.
