Sun, a former factory Husqvarna and factory Honda star has fond memories of High Point, as he claimed the 500cc class win there in 1980, ultimately leading to his AMA 500cc National Motocross Championship while he was with Team Honda. Sun also went on to become a 500cc U.S. GP winner in 1981. He was inducted into the American Motorcyclist Association Hall of Fame with the class of 2003.

“To be recognized so many years later after my career is truly a heartwarming experience, and I’m looking forward to it,” Sun said. “This sport is not just about the new riders, but also about the guys that were around years ago and are still enjoying motorcycles and racing. It’s a wonderful experience for me and a great honor. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Indeed, the 25th Annual DC Vet Homecoming celebrates veteran motocross riders everyehere, and the event promises a fun-filled “throwback” weekend of racing and activities catered to a group that many consider to be the true backbone of the sport. The DC Vet Homecoming is so-named in honor of the late, great Dave Coombs Sr., a tireless promoter who dedicated his life to shaping the disciplines of motocross and off-road racing in America.

Sun was known as a fierce competitor during his days with Team Honda and with Team Husqvarna before that. He won the 500cc National MX title with Honda in 1980 and also beat the best in the world at the 500cc U.S. GP at Carlsbad, California, in 1981.

The event will also serve as a stop for the Legends and Heroes Tour, which features a veritable rolling historic motocross museum, as part of the Vintage Bike Show taking place Sunday alongside the “Swap Meet,” where everyone is encouraged to bring out vintage gear and race items to sell, swap and barter. In addition, there will be numerous vintage competitions for which prizes will be awarded.

Legends and Heroes Tour General Managing Partner Alex Moroz said that the his group is excited to be a part of the 25th Annual DC Vet Homecoming.

“So many great vet riders will be attending,” Moroz said. “We will not only have the Moto Museum there for all the fans and racers to see, but we will field a team of riders for the weekend in various vet and vintage classes to compete and have some fun on the track.”

High Point Raceway will also host a Grand Prix/Moto-X-Country race on Saturday. The race will feature a mix of obstacles including grass track, woods sections and motocross track.
