How close has the sport of professional supercross and motocross moved toward mainstream sports? As close as your local grocery store aisle anyway.

In an unprecedented move that the sport could only dream about five years ago, motocross’ and supercross’ current bright star Ryan Dungey has been selected to appear on the cover of popular breakfast cereal Wheaties. The announcement was made by Tony Libera, Marketing Communication Planner for General Mills, during today’s Anaheim Supercross press conference at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California.

“For the better part of the last three years, Ryan Dungey has been a member of the Team Wheaties roster of athletes, running the gamut from football and basketball to lacrosse and motocross,” Libera said. “I obviously don’t need to tell you that in that time he has done some amazing things on the track, culminating this past year with championships in both motocross and supercross. There were many reasons why we chose Ryan for our team. Obviously he is a world-class athlete, but beyond that he has proven countless times to be a gracious representation of the sport, on and off the track. In short, Ryan exemplifies everything that a champion should be. Wheaties has been placing iconic athletes on the cover of its cereal boxes for over 80 years, but we’ve never had a motocross or supecross athlete on the cover. Until today.”

Libera said that Wheaties boxes featuring Dungey and his Red Bull KTM will begin to appear on the shelves of most grocery stores nationwide this month.

“This is a dream come true,” Dungey said. “As a kid, eating Wheaties while growing up, long before I was a champion, I’d see guys on the Wheaties box like Michael Jordan and Muhammed Ali or Tiger Woods. I hoped maybe one day my sport would align with Wheaties and we would be on there. Now, 15, 20 years later, it is a reality. It’s something I wished for as a little kid. But something else that really stuck me with was that I wanted to win races and championships, but I wanted to come into this sport and leave it better than when I came into it. Wheaties has now provided us the opportunity to reach millions of people who don’t know this sport. It has been an amazing journey, and I hope we can do more things like this.”
