Spain’s Toni Bou has won the FIM X-Trial World Championship so many times that they should practically name the championship trophy after him.
The Repsol Honda team rider did it again on March 14, clinching a record-setting ninth consecutive X-Trial title during round five of the six-round indoor trial series at Nova Arena in Wiener-Neustadt, Austria. Bou scored his 45th career indoor win at the event and mathematically eliminated his competition from title contention all at the same time.

The Repsol Honda Team came to the event with every intention of sealing the deal, and Bou’s semi-final performance raised the bar high as the eight competitors battled it out over the six technical sections laid out in Nova Arena.

Bou took control of the Austrian event in the second section during the final, and he was able to cruise from there. It was his the 45th indoor trial win of his career.

When the final got underway, the first section was impassable to all eight riders, but the Montesa Cota 4RT-mounted Bou got a leg up on the competition by being the only rider to make it through the second section. Bou built on his lead from there, scoring the win ahead of Jeroni Fajardo with Adam Raga finishing third. The result made Bou’s ninth FIM X-Trial World Championship a mathematical certainty.

“I’m really very pleased,” Bou said. “I had a great race, and the way that Adam has been going lately, I didn’t expect to win the title here. It was a very tricky and technical race, and Jeroni was really sharp today. I felt really comfortable in all the sections, and the crowd got really into it too, which is really good for the sport as well. It’s difficult to reflect on what this title means; nine is a lot, and I never thought that I would be able to win so many. The rivals have really battled and made it difficult, which is why it means so much. The bike has run like a dream all year, and the team has always been up to the job, always supportive, and I’d like to dedicate this victory to them, to my minder Joan Cordón, to my family and friends and everyone who follows me.”

The final stop-off for Team HRC in the FIM X-Trial World Championship will be held in the Palacio de los Deportes in Oviedo, Spain, Friday, March 20.
