The Top 10 Motocross Racers of All Time

Veteran motocross journalist Steve Cox assembles a list of the Top 10 Motocross Racers of All Time? Are you surprised who isn’t on it? So were we.

6.  Jeff Ward

  • Motocross5-time MX National Champion (36 total wins)
  • 2-time 250cc National Champion (13 wins)
  • 2-time 500cc National Champion (12 wins)
  • 1-time 125cc National Champion (11 wins)
  • First-ever “Mr. 875cc” in the USA, winning championships in all three displacement classes (and only racer ever to win all three outdoor titles and a 250/450cc Supercross title – and he won two of those)
  • 7 Motocross des Nations wins

The Flying Freckle was one of those indomitable personalities that just doesn’t come along very often. Jeff Ward rose to fame as a child doing a bitchin’ stand-up wheelie on his minibike in On Any Sunday, and then rose through the pro ranks after being lapped in his first-ever 125cc MX National. Eventually, he took home a 125cc title before moving up and battling it out with Ricky Johnson, Ron Lechien, Broc Glover, David Bailey, and the rest of the best of the time on his way to seven total AMA National titles (5 outdoors). Every year he was picked for the Motocross des Nations team, he went, and they won, from 1983 through 1990 (only missing the 1986 event during that span). After he was done racing motocross and supercross, he raced Indy Cars for a while, scoring second place in the Indy 500 one year, and then returned to two wheels to win Supermoto Championships both in the AMA and at the X Games. If you ever run into Jeff Ward and he offers to race you in or on any type of vehicle, back away slowly. It’s a setup.
