Video: Cheating Death in the Qatari Sand Dunes

See how a Jeep 4×4 goes from Wrangler to wrinkled when it strays into the path of a high-flying freestyle motocross rider in the sand dunes of Qatar.

You can almost smell the poop...
You can almost smell the poop…

We may all like to think of riding dirtbikes as death-defying, and we all may have experienced a potentially life-ending event while taking to the dirt, but this Qatari sand dune rider can literally count his lucky stars that he didn’t end up in a box.

Found on the Desert Dirtbikes YouTube channel, this 2017 KTM 450 SX-F rider, who is referred to as Kal (Rapid Leprachaun) was attempting a tandem skyshot off the backside of a blind dune when a couple 4x4s wandered directly into the path of his landing zone. As the postmaster of this video put it, his friend “landed onto Jeep wrangler hood/bonnet during a desert free ride motocross session in the Qatar dunes. My mate hit a big dune jump and due to lack of communication between the boys at the top of the dune nobody saw the jeep coming until he was airborne, he landed on the hood but thankfully rode away like a boss. An unbelievable escape from what could of been a deadly dune wreck/crash.”

The footage is pretty wild, and it will always make for a great story, but this not-so-little dunes stunt could’ve ended tragically. Pulling off insane launches in the dunes is one of the perks that makes thrashing a bike in the sand worth it–if you don’t think you will need to service your suspension linkage and fish the silicon-laden grit out of every orifice on your machine, expect bad things to happen–but this video shows just how important it is to have competent spotters to which you must literally entrust your life when you’re going to go for the big air.

We’re just glad that the ol’ Rabid Leprechaun came through this one unscathed, which is more than we can see for the Jeep Wrangler that he used as a landing ramp.

Lucky indeed.
