Red Bull KTM’s Jonny Walker landed his first Maxxis FIM SuperEnduro World Championship of 2016 and wrestled the 2015-16 series points lead away from America’s Cody Webb at the AMV Seguros GP of Argentina in Pinamar, Argentina, Saturday.

Walker secured the overall win by scoring two race wins and a second place. Another American, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Colton Haaker finished second overall, while Webb finished third overall.

Webb got off to a good start in Pinamar by winning the SuperPole event, which was good for three additional championship points. It also gave him the prime gate pick for the first of the three main events. Webb got off to a quick start in the first heat race, only to tangle with another rider and crash in the first turn. Walker got away and took the win, followed by a trio of Americans that included Haaker, Taylor Robert and Ty Tremaine.

In the second heat race, Walker took the lead and won again while Webb suffered a huge crash over a large double jump on the course. Haaker scored another second-place finish, followed by Spain’s Alfredo Gomez. Webb finished fourth. Webb came back strong in the third and final heat race, yet despite a win by Webb, Walker’s second-place finish was more than good enough for the overall win. More importantly, it gave him the series points lead. He now leads Webb by 11 points, 159-148, with three rounds remaining.

“It’s almost a prefect night,” Walker said. “Two races wins and a second place result for the overall victory is great. But to then take control of the championship lead by 11 points is just incredible.”

Second overall was Haaker’s best series finish to date.

“I’m pleased,” Haaker said. “This runner-up result is definitely a step in the right direction. The track was hard to judge. When I rode slow I finished good, but when I pushed hard I made some mistakes. But things are coming together and, with the chance to go racing next weekend in Brazil, I’m looking forward to it.”

Webb admitted that he just didn’t have a good night despite salvaging third overall.

“I made some silly mistakes, had a couple of bad starts and one big crash in race three,” he said. “Thankfully I regrouped to win the final race. It’s tough to lose control of the points race, but I’m not going to dwell on that too much. I’ll be on the attack again for Brazil.”

KTM’s Gomez finished fourth overall, followed by Robert. Tremaine, the 2015 Junior World Champion finished sixth overall.

Round four of the Maxxis FIM SuperEnduro World Championship is scheduled to take place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, February 27.
