Members of the Kurt Caselli Foundation (KCF) attended round seven of the AMA National Hare & Hound series in Panaca, Nevada, last weekend, to gather concussuion baseline data from youth racers and providing pre-race course inspection and guidance.

The Kurt Caselli Foundation was set up to administer the King-Devick concussion baseline test at signup to youth racers who have not yet received their baseline score. The baseline score test is important in evaluating possible concussions after a head impact. The King-Devick Test is an objective remove-from-play sideline concussion-screening test that can be administered by parents and coaches in minutes. The King-Devick Test is regarded as an accurate and reliable method for identifying athletes with head trauma.

The Kurt Caselli Foundation believes that it can create a safer environment for youth racers by identifying concussions and mild traumatic brain injury early. Early detection from King-Devick test results can provide parents with valuable information to use, along with health care professionals, to determine proper treatment for their children before they compete again.

In another move to improve safety, the Kurt Caselli Foundation also recruited off-road legend Paul Krause to complete the KCF’s mandatory pre-ride of the three-loop, 100-mile Hare & Hound course. Krause was able to inspect the entire race course, providing feedback to the hosting club about possible dangers and areas to improve course markings.

In a press release issued after the event, the Kurt Caselli Foundation thanked the Silver State Trail Blazers, The National Hare & Hound Association and all of the youth hare & hound parents for making it possible for the organization to continue its mission to increase off-road racing safety by protecting and supporting the lives of off-road riders.
