Retrospective: 20 Years of Yamaha YZ Four-Stroke MXers

Yamaha introduced the YZ400F four-stroke motocross machine 20 years ago. Here’s a look back at the generations of YZs that lead to the 2018 YZ450.

Yamaha shook things up drastically with the development of the 2010 YZ450F and its reverse-headed, rearward-incline four-stroke Single. The all-new cylinder head became the first of Yamaha’s big four-stroke motocrossers to feature a four-valve cylinder head instead of five-valver since the beginning of the model line. The engine was also fuel-injected rather than carbureted, and the powerplant was housed in an all-new bilateral beam aluminum chassis with heavy emphasis placed on mass centralization.
