The AMA has issued a fine to Lucas Oil/Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Malcolm Stewart pursuant to an on-track incident that occurred between Stewart and Muscle Milk Honda’s Justin Barcia during the Daytona Supercross by Honda at Daytona International Speedway on March 8.

The AMA has fined Stewart $5000 and placed him on probation for the remainder of the 2014 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series.

The incident between the two Honda riders occurred on lap 10. Barcia, who was running in sixth place, attempted to cut under fifth-placed Stewart in a corner. There was contact, with both riders crashing to the ground. Stewart was clearly angry over the incident, and he pushed Barcia once both riders got to their feet. Stewart then picked up his bike and rammed it into Barcia’s Honda, knocking Barcia to the ground again. Stewart’s bike had already suffered damage from the initial contact, and although he was back on track before Barcia, he was forced to slow over one of the larger jumps on the track. As Stewart coasted over the obstacle, Barcia jumped past him, looked over and flipped him a hand gesture.

Yesterday, the AMA issued news of the fine, citing violations of Appendix A2, Section C, parts 9, 10 and 17 of the 2014 AMA Supercross Rulebook, including:

“9. Engaging in any unfair practice, misbehavior or action detrimental to the sport of motorcycling in general, whether or not related to a specific competition event.”

“10. An attack on a racing official and/or engaging in a fight. This includes any person who attacks or is involved in a fight anywhere on the premises prior to, during or after a Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship meet. There will be no maximum fine or suspension period for this offense.”

“17. Riding on or off the track at any time in such a manner as to endanger the life or limb of other riders, officials or the public.”

The AMA release called these violations “serious” and reiterated that it had already warned Stewart over a similar incident that took place between him and Yamaha rider Cooper Webb at the Oakland Supercross on January 25; Stewart pushed Webb after the two collided and crashed.

This is the second such fine and probationary period handed down by the AMA in recent weeks. Mike Alessi was fined $4000 and placed on probation for the remainder of the 2014 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series after ramming RCH/Soaring Eagle Suzuki rider Broc Tickle during their heat race at the Atlanta Supercross on February 22.
