Zip Ty Racing’s Dalton Shirey stormed to his first career Pro win when round five of the Rocky Mountain MC World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) visited Sand Hollow State Park in Hurricane, Utah, Sunday

Shirey pulled the holeshot over FMF/KTM Factory Racing-backed Gary Sutherlin, but the 2014 WORCS Champion, who was competing in only his second WORCS round of the year, quickly moved past Shirey and into the race lead. Shirey hung right with Sutherlin and retook the lead after Sutherline bobbled going through the scoring chute at the end of the lap.
Shirey then put his head down and never surrendered the lead for the rest of the race to claim the win. Sutherlin finished second behind Shirey, who move into second place in the WORCS points race, behind reigning series champion Robby Bell.
Speaking of Bell, the champ crashed numerous times during the Sand Hollow race but managed to finish third anyway.

“I was definitely a little tentative in the sand, and I did it the hard way,” Bell said. “I got a bad start, so by the time I got to third, those guys were gone. I tried to switch up some lines in the rocks and I had two falls. Eric caught up to me and we had a heck of a battle into the finish. Dalton [Shirey] and Gary [Sutherlin] were just on another level today.”

After being penalized for speeding in the pits, Eric Yorba was dropped to fifth place behind Colton Udall.
Travis Damon claimed his second Pro 2 win of the season thanks to an opening-lap blitz that allowed him to distance himself from the rest of the class. Zane Roberts finished second and Alex Dorsey finished third. Damon’s is now just two points behind Pro 2 points leader Logan Chambers, who finished fourth.

“I got off to a rough start, but by the time I got to the top of the big hill, I was in the lead, and I kept going,” Damon said. “I pulled a pretty good gap, and did what I do. I just tried to run a smooth race and not fall. This is my favorite round, so it’s nice to be on top.”

Roberts battled with eventual Pro 2 Lites winner Dante Oliveira for most of the race. Oliveira claimed the Pro 2 Lites win to run his undefeated streak to five races. Clayton Hengeveld finished second, followed by Riley Snow.

“I got the holeshot, kept it out front and tried to keep it off the ground,” said Oliveira. “The sand is different, but I had a lot of fun.”

The next WORCS round is scheduled for Mesquite, Nevada May 6-8.
