Red Bull KTM Factory rider Ryan Dungey traded moto wins with Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, during round five of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Series at Budds Creek Raceway in Mechanicsville, Maryland, on June 2, with Dungey taking a well-earned victory via 2-1 moto finishes.

Villopoto struck first in moto one of the 450cc class, taking the lead while Dungey moved into second place on lap one. Villopoto set a fast pace and began lapping riders by the midway point in the moto, but Dungey was able to keep pressure on the Kawasaki rider until a crash in a sand roller section derailed his chance for a moto win. Villopoto was able to cruise to victory while Dungey quickly remounted without losing a position and went on to finish second. Smartop Motoconcepts Racing Suzuki’s Mike Alessi finished third in the moto, matching his best moto performance of this season.

Alessi got the holeshot to start moto two, but Dungey quickly took over the lead on the opening lap. Villopoto, meanwhile, suffered from a bad start and was nearly 10 seconds behind Dungey by the time he made his way into second place. Dungey kept his head down and turned in 17 solid laps for the moto win, finishing a comfortable 17.787 seconds ahead of Villopoto to claim his second overall win of the year. Villopoto secured second overall, while Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Malcolm Stewart, brother of Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart, finished a strong third in moto two after James crashed and handed him the spot. Stewart’s 9-3 moto finishes were good enough for fourth overall, behind more consistent Muscle Milk Honda rider Trey Canard, who posted 6-4 moto finishes on the day. Villopoto still leads Dungey in the series standings, 240-224.

After the race, Dungey said that he was happy with the way the day went.

“The team and I put in a lot of work on our weekend off from racing testing at my home on Florida,” Dungey said. “I felt we made great progress and that showed in our result today. I feel like Ryan (Villopoto) and I have really stepped it up to a new level this year and we are both pushing each other to ride at our limits. It definitely makes the racing exciting and keeps me on my toes, and I’m enjoying that this year.”

The next round of the series is scheduled to take place at Moto-X 338, “The World’s Fastest Sandbox,” in Southwick, Massachusetts on June 29.
