Jeffrey Herlings: Will He or Won’t He Race the Ironman National?

Apparently Jeffrey Herlings is not confirmed to participate in the Christi Hubler Chevrolet Ironman National MX. MX Sports Pro Racing explains.

Just a few hours ago, a press release was issued, regarding the entry of multi-time FIM MX2 World Champion Jeffrey Herlings into the Christi Hubler Chevrolet Ironman National, the final round of the 2017 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship in Indiana, August 26.

But apparently, series organizer MX Sports Pro Racing banged into the starting gate in issuing that press release, as Herlings is reportedly not yet confirmed to race in the event, which takes place one weekend before the FIM MXGP of the USA at WW Motocross Park in Gainesville, Florida. Herlings of course will be on hand for the GP, and it would make some sense if he did compete in the Ironman National if he could use it as a testing opportunity before Gainesville. The sticking point is that if Herlings does race the AMA round, he cannot do it aboard the bike he rides in the World Championship.

MX Sports Pro Racing issued this press release just moments ago to explain the situation:

MX Sports Pro Racing Apologizes for Releasing Confirmation of Herlings Participation at Ironman National

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (August 23, 2017)–Due to an internal error while we were traveling to the Ironman National in Crawfordsville, Indiana, MX Sports Pro Racing mistakenly released a draft of a press release involving multi-time FIM World Champion Jeffrey Herlings’ possible participation in this weekend’s final round of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross. Herlings has not actually entered the event and has only begun testing the bike he would have to ride, should he choose to participate in the AMA Pro Racing-sanctioned event; AMA Pro Racing and the FIM-sanctioned MXGP have different rules and regulations, and Herlings would not be able to use his usual race bike for this event.

“We totally jumped the starting gate on crafting a press release, and I take full responsibility for any confusion this may have caused,” said MX Sports Pro Racing’s Davey Coombs. “I apologize for the error and hope that Jeffrey enjoys his time here in America as he prepares for the main reason he and his team are here, which is next weekend’s MXGP of the USA in Florida.”
