Red Bull KTM’s rally racing legend, Marc Coma, is calling it quits, will join Dakar Rally race organization.
In a surprise announcement, reigning Dakar Rally Champion and FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Champion Marc Coma of Spain has announced his retirement from the sport of rally racing.
Coma, 38, leaves the sport while clearly still at the top of his game, having won five Dakar titles (2006, 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2015) and six FIM Cross-Country Rally World Championships (2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2014) in the last 10 years.
“I’m retiring because I think it’s the right time,” Coma said in a statement regarding his decision to call it quits. “After 12 Dakar races, five wins and all those kilometers I’ve raced, I need to be honest with myself and everyone that’s backed me over all these years: KTM, where I’ve always felt at home, and all my sponsors. Thanks to you all.”
But although he is hanging up his helmet, Coma will not be far from the action as he has accepted a position with the organizers of the Dakar Rally to become the sporting manager of the prestigious race. In fact, Coma will report to work in July to assist with the organization of the 2016 Dakar Rally.
