Coming into round six of the GEICO AMA EnduroCross Series at the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City last weekend, American Beta’s Cody Webb was just one point out of a series point lead shared by two other riders. Webb erased that deficit and took over the series points lead with a main event win Saturday night.

The 15-lap main event was action-packed, typical of just about every GEICO EnduroCross Series event, but Webb made it even more interesting due to a late-race mistake that nearly cost him the win. Factory Husqvarna rider Mike Brown pulled the holeshot and led the main event for the first four laps. Factory FMF/KTM teammates Taddy Blazusiak and Taylor Robert also got good starts and slotted into second place and third place respectively. However, Webb had established a good rhythm right from the start, and he made passed both the KTM boys in the fire pit section to move to second place.

Brwon hung on out front for the first four laps of the main event before Webb caught and passed him. Webb opened up a huge gap on the field, only to nearly give it all away when he stopped to celebrate on the track after lap 12, thinkning that the race was over. Due to the lap times, EnduroCross officials had extended the race by three more laps, and Webb simply forgot that fact. However, once he came to the realization, he still had enough of a lead to ride out the three remaining laps and take the win for real.

Blazusiak slipped past Brown in the final laps for second place, and then Brown got hung-up in the rock section just before the white flag, allowing Robert to get past him and steal the final podium spot. Brown crossed the line ahead of Lucas Oul/Rockstar Energy/JCR Honda’s Colton Haaker, finishing fourth.

Webb’s win moved him past both Blazusiak and Haaker to take the GEICO EnduroCross Series points lead. He now leads Blazusiak by three points, 143-140, with Haaker slipping back to third, with 133 points. Salt Lake City AMA EnduroCross Main Event
