2016 ISDE Day 3: More Good Fortune for Team USA

Today at the 2016 ISDE, Team USA’s World Trophy squad extended its lead; Junior World Trophy team improves from third place to second place.

Though mud isn’t his thing, Taylor Robert had lots of practice in it while competing in the Enduro World Championship this year. As the 91st International Six Days Enduro (2016 ISDE) hit the halfway point in Navarra, Spain, today, Team USA enjoyed a day of good fortune, its various teams generally improving across the board.

The U.S. World Trophy team remained atop the standings, padding its lead over Italy by just over a minute so that the cushion is now one minute, 35.88 seconds. Spain is third, 8.89 seconds behind Italy.

Leading the way for the Americans is Taylor Robert who, in fact, leads the overall standings on an individual basis by 19.52 seconds over Australia’s Daniel Sanders.

“My day was really good,” Robert said. “I stayed off the ground all day, which was nice, especially since it was muddy conditions [today], which isn’t my forte. Luckily, I did all the [Enduro] World Championship races this year, and it rained at six of the eight races so I got a little bit of practice in! “Everybody [on the team] is still going, which we’ve got to keep that going; some guys have some bumps and bruises here [so] we’ve just got to keep things going smooth. We’ve been slowly getting a bigger gap every day so if we just keep doing that, things should go good.”

For the day, Robert prevailed by 7.73 seconds, Portugal’s Luis Correia second fastest and Sanders just 0.66 behind Correia. Fellow American Kailub Russell fared well in the muddy, misty conditions to end the day fifth fastest overall individually, Thad Duvall 19th and Layne Michael 29th.

In the Junior World Trophy standings, Team USA’s Grant Baylor, Steward Baylor and Trevor Bollinger moved up another slot and now sit in second, 1:55.60 behind Sweden, after Spain lost a rider today. Grant Baylor had the best day of the American bunch, his time the 16th fastest overall.

The U.S. Women’s World Trophy team isn’t close to defending champs Australia or the trios from Spain and Germany, but the Americans did move up to fourth today. Tarah Geiger led the way for the Americans, with Nicole Bradford edging Rachel Gutish by about a minute on the day.

Finally, the Club team standings say the Trail Jesters (Ben Kelley, Jason Klammer and Josh Toth) hold firmly onto second behind Italy, Toth the fastest Club rider overall. Kelley had a big tumble in the first test and slowed a bit with a broken clutch perch and throttle cable. Once he got those items replaced, he was back up to speed and once again among the leaders.

Though not quite ready to beat the fastest Aussies, Spanish or German girls right now, 2016 ISDE newbie Tarah Geiger isn’t far off the pace. That helped boost the American Women’s World Trophy team back into fourth today. PHOTO BY MARK KARIYA.

The Eric Cleveland Memorial trio (Alex Dorsey, Broc Hepler and Jimmy Jarrett) moved into third, 3:18.04 behind the Trail Jesters who are 5:32.89 behind Italy. The Missouri Mudders (JT Baker, Nate Ferderer and Ryan Powell) climbed back up to sixth after dropping to seventh after the second day. Tony Agonis Memorial (Kale Elworthy, Joey Fiasconaro and AJ Lehr) moved up to 10th; Michigan Offroad Events (Mike Pillar, Luke Ross and Talon Soenksen) dropped from 20th to 22nd, and the Elizabeth Scott Community trio of Senior-class riders (Dan Capparelli, Jayson Densley and Brian Storrie) found themselves jumping from 26th to 24th.

The second half of the Six Days begins tomorrow on the same loop as today, though no more rain is forecast for the week.
