2016 ISDE Day 1: Team USA Leads World Trophy

Kailub Russell and Taylor Robert give the Team USA World Trophy team hope with solid 2-3 finishes as the 2016 ISDE opens in Spain.

Despite missing 2015 ISDE individual champion Ryan Sipes, the Team USA World Trophy team is off to a fantastic start at the 2016 International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) in Navarra, Spain, taking the World Trophy lead over Italy on the strength of a 2-3 overall finishes by Kailub Russell and Taylor Robert, both of whom are contesting the E2 class, on Day 1.

Russell and Robert set the pace early in the arid Spanish countryside, running first and second respectively in Special Test 1. Russell posted a winning time of 7 minutes, 27.03 seconds, with Robert coming in just 2.71 seconds behind him. Third place went to Daniel Sanders of the defending ISDE World Trophy champions, Australia. Team USA’s Thad DuVall also got off to a strong start, finishing eighth in Special Test 1, and Layne Michael finished 27th.

Italy’s reigning FIM Junior World Champion, Giacomo Redondi, went on to post the best individual overall time of the day, but Both Russell and Robert ran inside the top 10 in just about every special test; Russell slipped to 11th in just one of them as he went on to post the second best overall time of the day. As it stands Team USA holds a 26-second lead over Italy in the World Trophy. Host country Spain is third, 1 minute and 10 seconds out of the lead.

The Team USA Junior World Trophy team is outside of the top three but is still very much in contention. Steward Baylor had a great run of tests today, unofficially sneaking into the top 10 in E2 while Trevor Bollinger in E1 (for 125cc two-strokes and 250cc four-strokes) also had a decent day. Steward’s brother Grant, also in E2, was disappointed in his results after losing an estimated 40 seconds on an extremely dusty hill climb in one enduro test, having pinned it into the dust blindly and paying for it by crashing into another rider and having to take another shot at it.

The U.S. Women’s World Trophy team had a fair day with all three (veterans Nicole Bradford and Rachel Gutish joined by first-timer Tarah Geiger) finishing roughly in the middle of the pack.

“I actually think we’re doing pretty well,” Bradford said. “We’re probably third, maybe fourth. All of us are getting along really well—Tarah’s hilarious—so it’s a good team; we mesh well and I think we’re all riding pretty good.”

Defending World Trophy Champion Australia is already in dire straits after Day 1, as one of its main men, AMSOIL GNCC competitor Josh Strang, crashed and suffered a broken ankle.
