The KTM 250 XC-F and EXC-F share the same engine design paramaters of the 350 XC-F and 350 EXC-F, along with the redesigned chassis that is used on all linkage suspension equipped KTM off-road models. The 250 XC-F is designed for closed course off-road competition such as is found in GNCC events while the 250 EXC-F is geared more toward enduro events.

In both cases, reworking its 249cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC four-stroke Single has allowed KTM to shave two pounds from the engine, which is now 20mm shorter for better mass centralization. Tuning specs between the two engine differ, with the 250 XC-F revving as high as 14,000 rpm while the 250 EXC-F signs off at 12,800 rpm.
