Yamaha TT-R230 – $4,449
Best Beginner Dirtbikes

Yamaha’s TT-R230 has a long-standing reputation as a great beginner bike, offering a racy look yet delivering predictable handling and an easy-to-manage 223cc two-valve, SOHC, air-cooled four-stroke engine that is tuned to produce a broad powerband. The TT-R230 features electric starting for convenience, and its manual clutch feeds power to a six-speed transmission. Its seat height is a very manageable 34.3 inches and yet the TT-R230 offers 11.6 inches of front and rear travel to help the rider remain comfortable when the trail starts to get rough. Yamaha claims that the TT-R230’s steel chassis is strong and rugged, and that its handling character is inspired by the company’s decidedly non-beginner YZ motocross and off-road models. That may be a bit of a stretch, but it’s definitely no stretch to place the TT-R230 squarely in the middle of our 5 Best Beginner Dirtbikes list.
