Ask DirtBikes Anything: Who Made Those Plates?

For this edition of Ask DirtBikes Anything, DirtBikes.com reader Greg Wyne wants to know who made our bitchin’ 2017 Yamaha 250F.

DirtBikes.com reader Greg Wyne dropped us the following line after reading our ride review of the 2017 Yamaha YZ250F and YZ450F, and we thought it would make a good initial entry into our all-new Ask DirtBikes Anything, which means, as the name implies, you can ask us anything. It can be serious, funny, dirtbikes-related or not. Just keep it semi-clean, and if we don’t know the answer ourselves, we’ll find someone who does and get back to you as soon as we can. If you have an Ask DirtBikes Anything question, shoot us an email at editor@dirtbikes.com.

Anyway, Greg wrote to us:

Nice article on the 2017 YZ250F, who made the number plate backgrounds?
Thanks,
Greg

That’s an easy one, Greg, because the designer who put together both sets of backgrounds for our YZ250F and YZ450F is practically a member of the family, none other than DirtBikes.com test rider Ryan Abbatoye. He is also the owner and operator of RAD Custom Graphic Graphics in Ridgecrest, California. RAD Custom Graphics specializes in everything from number plate backgrounds to complete personalized custom graphics for most dirtbike models, vehicle wraps, t-shirts, stickers and other promotional items.

“Typically something like the backgrounds Greg saw on the DirtBikes.com YZ250F will run $64.99,” Abbatoye said. “Adding fender spears will run another $14.99. The most expensive full custom bike graphics kit, which is made exactly to the customer’s specifications, runs $199.”

And, Greg, a funny story about those graphics: When we arrived at Yamaha’s splendid press intro, Abbatoye had two sets of number plate backgrounds ready to go, one set for a Limited Edition white/red/black machine and one set for a standard blue/white machine. But a miscommunication with Yamaha left us with two Limited Edition models instead of one, and the blue highlights that Abbatoye employed for the second set simply didn’t work. So, the “RAD” one got even more custom by taking a pair of scissors and quickly yet surgically removing most of the blue traces in such a way that few people actually realized that the graphics weren’t designed that way. He’s a sly character, that Ryan Abbatoye. Now if we could only get him to remember to bring our DirtBikes.com fender spears with him, like, every single time we are scheduled to meet at the track, that would be awesome!
