Mike Brown returned to his motocross roots this weekend for his first run of three rounds in the CMRC Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals. Brown finished 10th in the MX1 clas at the Gopher Dunes course in Courtland, Ontario, Canada, aboard a dealer-backed Husqvarna FC 450, yesterday.

Brown qualified 11th fastest on Saturday at the sandy Gopher Dunes track, which is considered by many to be the toughest in Canada. Hot summer weather and high 80% humidity served fair warning that Sunday’s conditions would be brutal. Husqvarna Canada Managing Director Florian Burguet said that the Gopher Dunes sand can be deceiving. When it’s prepped for the race it appears smooth and easy to ride.

“But that all changes just as soon as the guys start racing on it,” Burguet said. “Even Mike with all of his experience commented that Southwick had nothing on Gopher Dunes and that he could not believe how much this track changed with each lap.”

Burguet added that Brown’s #311 Factory Husqvarna FC 450 was prepped perfectly for the conditions with a fresh Factory Services motor and minor tuning of the suspension. Dunlop provided an MX11 sand tire for the rear and MX32 up front, both of which were ideal for the deep sand conditions.

Brown started 11th in Moto 1 but rounded turn one inside the top 10, and he immediately began passing his way through the pack to end up sixth at the finish. The second moto didn;t go quite as well, as Brown started 11th again and was mired there for the entire moto. His 6-11 scores earned him 10th overall. Even so, Burguet was pleased with the Tennessean, who was mobbed by Canadian fans all weekend.

“I think Mike had a great showing here, and a 10th place result in a stacked field on a tough track says a lot about him.” Burguet said. “He is more than fired up for next week. He’s returning home to Tennessee to train on a track very similar to what he will race next weekend so we might see a different result July 20 at Sand Del Lee, Round 6.”
