Product Review: CruzTools Outback’r M14 Multi-Tool

CruzTools’ Outback’r M14 offers 14 tools in one compact package; but it’s a companion tool more than a replacement for a well-stocked trail kit.

CruzTools’ Outback’r multi-tool is one of those compact multi-tools that could come in handy should find yourself in need of repairs or adjustments on the trail.

This tough little (9 oz.) unit offers a strategic selection of tools for mechanical use, without the extraneous knives, scissors or other general-purpose gadgets found on most multi-tools. Within its 3.5” (w) x 1.75” (d) x 1” (h) satin-black metal housing, the M14 contains the following array: four hex-keys (6mm, 5mm, 4mm, 3mm), two screwdrivers (3/16” flat and #1 Phillips), three six-point sockets (8mm, 10mm, 12mm) with ¼” driver, two open-end wrenches (13mm, 14mm) and three spoke wrenches.

Despite its diminutive size, the M14 allows its user to apply considerable force through most of its tools when they are folded out at a 90-degree angle from the housing, since the ovoid handle is comfortable to grip and provides plenty of purchase (other angles are possible, but offer less leverage). The open-end and spoke wrenches are of rather limited use, however, since they must be opened inline with the body, and then can only transmit torque in one direction (they simply hinge closed in the other direction). Also, because these wrench openings are so close to the wide handle, the space requirements around the nut or bolt being accessed are greater than usually found on a motorcycle (especially on a spoked wheel!).

Many popular multi-tools have pliers, which the M14 lacks. This is a significant shortcoming, as pliers have obvious utility in a wide variety of situations. It doesn’t come with a pouch for attachment to your belt, and it’s too heavy and bulky to be a comfortable addition to a pants pocket. But the M14’s hex-keys and sockets are not available on conventional multi-tools–at least not without paying around four times as much. We recommend the M14 in combination with a mainstream multi-tool; it’s an inexpensive addition that adds substantial functional value for the rider who wants to be prepared for minor mechanical needs, although it will never replace a well-stocked tool pouch.

A note on ordering: CruzTools does not sell its wares directly to the public; their website lists a variety of retail outlets. We purchased ours from Seattle Cycle, but experienced a lengthy delay (over two months) because the unit was back-ordered, and then there was some confusion/disorganization at the vendor that resulted in the unit not being shipped promptly once it became available. We’d suggest you try other sources, such as Motosport.com and Chaparral-Racing.com
