Red Bull KTM’s Sam Sunderland won Stage 4 and is clearly in the driver’s seat on the way to the overall victory at the 2016 Sealine Rally after Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Pablo Quintanilla made a whopper of a navigational error in the sands of Qatar today.

Quintanilla opened the stage today, but he got off course in the Qatari dunes within the first 20 minutes and soon found himself lost. Quintanilla would recover, but he lost several positions before he did. José Cornejo led the 10-rider field through the first checkpoint, followed by Sunderland and Yamaha factory riders Adrien Van Beveren and Helder Rodrigues. By the time Quintanilla made his way through the check, he had lost 24 minutes and 24 seconds to the leader.

Sunderland moved into the stage lead by the refueling stop at checkpoint two. He would go on to hold the lead through the third and fourth checkpoints and cross the finish line with a winning stage time of 4 hours 6 minutes and 25 seconds. Van Beveren came home second, 2 minutes and 19 seconds behind Sunderland, with Cornejo finishing third, another 25 seconds behind the Frenchman.

Quintanilla did his best to make up for his navigational gaff, finishing fifth, behind Rodrigues, but the Husky rider is in a deep hole now. He still hold second overall in the rally, but he is 18 minutes and 45 seconds behind Sunderland heading into tomorrow’s final stage. If the Sealine Rally holds true to most of the rallies on the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship circuit, very little movement can be expected in the running order.
